Safety Specialist
Full Job Description
Purpose of Position: Safety specialist plans and manages the general health, safety and loss control policies and procedures of the organization. Monitors and evaluates the workplace to ensure compliance with government regulatory agencies. The safety specialist designs and directs safety training programs to reduce accidents, occupational illness, and long-term health hazards. Develops worker plans and policies for new employee safety orientation including skill training, emergency preparedness, proper job instruction and the use of protective equipment. Additionally, safety specialist studies, identifies and reports causes of past accidents and develops recommendations and follow-up to prevent accident recurrences.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
An energetic and mature self-starter, detail and results oriented person with the ability to complete multiple tasks. Must be able to work independently, use time wisely and have excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral. Bilingual (English/Spanish) is preferred. PC skills: MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint internet and menu driven systems. Ability to travel to project work sites daily or as needed with a company vehicle. Ability to observe and perceive any work activity that might become a potential hazard. Should have the ability to handle confrontation and use diplomacy when necessary. Must demonstrate knowledge in governing OSHA 29 CFR 1926 standards and ANSI Z133 standards. Solid leadership background managing and leading team members.
Education & Certifications: ISA Certified Arborist, Certified Treecare Safety Professional, Certified Commercial Pesticide Applicator, completed OSHA 30-hour course, CDL driver’s license preferred. 5+ years of experience working in the utility industry. Knowledge and experience in utility line clearance is highly preferred. Other safety and industry programs, DOT management, Drug Testing, 3rd party contract management tools, basic risk management understanding, and a minimum of 2 years supervisory experience. Understanding of ANSI Z133 standards and OSHA compliance regulations are required. Ability to investigate incidents and draft incident reports.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Reports to the Manager of Safety.
- Serves as the safety subject matter expert for responsible area.
- Lead in safety communication, participate in safety meetings, and produce safety reports for the region, to the manager of safety, regional team, and corporate office.
- Regional recordkeeping of incidents. Audit to ensure records are completed.
- Relay safety responsibilities to all staff.
- Conduct regular site safety assessments; provide reports on periodic inspections and corrective actions.
- Facilitate the investigation of accidents and follow up on corrective actions.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, federal, OSHA and company standards.
- Stop hazardous operations where life hazard or major property damage is imminent and take corrective action before allowing personnel to resume production work.
- Conduct safety meetings with all personnel involved.
- Be on-site and observe and coach for safety compliance.
- Respond in the event of any local, state, or federal safety and health (OSHA) investigation.
- The safety specialist is expected to travel on a regular basis and conduct his/her business at the work sites. (Some projects are out of state).
- Also, it is expected that the safety specialist will develop a professional working relationship with field personnel and customers alike. This position is meant to aid all company personnel in successfully maintaining a safe and healthy work environment minimizing accidents while maintaining the highest level of production possible.

- Fosters a proactive safety culture through a professional and caring approach.
- Provides any required monthly reports to the manager of safety.
- All other assigned duties.
